The oldest part of Four Oaks is the private estate laid out on the grounds of Four Oaks Hall from the 1880s onwards. Along Luttrell Road and Hartopp Road the houses are large late-Victorian, Edwardian and Arts and Crafts villas on wide, heavily planted plots, and the area is now a conservation area. Head towards Mere Green and the stock changes to interwar semis, post-war detached houses and, close to the shops, newer apartment blocks. Sutton Park runs along the western edge, so mature trees stand over a good many gardens and rooflines and shape most of the work here.
