Kings Heath grew along its High Street, so the housing changes character within a few hundred yards. Nearest the shops are the late-Victorian and Edwardian terraces and bay-fronted villas, much of that frontage now sitting inside the Kings Heath conservation area. West of the centre, the 1890s Cartland estate on Cartland Road, Vicarage Road and Stanley Road brought Arts and Crafts houses in red brick with stone dressings and tile-hung gables. Further out, the farmland at Haunch Farm was built over with semis between the wars, and the last of the fields went to housing in the 1950s. Each generation of roof, gutter and window wants handling slightly differently, which is the useful part of working the same streets year after year.
